Maine poocha chand se

Ke dekha hai kahin

Mere yaar sa haseen

Chand ne kaha chandini ki kasam

Nahin, nahin, nahin

I asked the moon

Have you ever seen

One as gorgeous as my beloved

The moon said: I swear on the moonlight

No, No, No.

O! Maine ye hijaab tera doonda

Har jagah shabaab tera doonda

Kaliyon se misaal teri poochi

Phoolon mein javaab tera doonda

Oh! I searched for this shyness of yours (hijab has two meanings)

I searched for your youthfulness everywhere

I asked the blossoms about you

I searched for your answer in flowers

Maine poocha baag se

Phalak ho ya zameen

Aisa phool hai kaheen

Baag ne kaha, har kali ki kasam

Nahin, Nahin, Nahin

I asked the garden

Be it in the heavens or on earth

Is there a flower as beautiful  [as you]

The garden said, I swear on every bud

No, No, No

O! Chaal hai ke mauj ki ravaani

Zulf hain ke raat ki kahaani

Hont hain ke aa-iney kanval ke

Aankh hain ke maikadon ki raani

Oh! Is this a walk or [like] a movement of wave ?

Are these your beautiful hair or the story of the night?

Are these lips or mirror the lotuses?

Are these eyes or the queen of a wine-house?

Maine poocha jaam se

Phalak ho ya zameen

Aisi mai bhi hai kaheen

Jaam ne kaha, maikashi ki kasam

Nahin, Nahin, Nahin

I asked the goblet

Be it in the heavens or on earth

Is there an wine like this

The goblet said; swear by the joy of drunkenness

No, No, No

O! Khoobsoorati jo tune paayee

Lutt gayee khuda ki bass khudayee

Mir ki ghazal kahoon tuje mein

Ya kahoon Khayyam ki Rubayee

Main jo poochoon shayaron se

Aisa dilnashin, koi sher hai kaheen

Shaayar kahe, shaayari ki kasam

Nahin, Nahin, Nahin

Oh! This beauty that you were blessed with,

God was thus deprived of all his godliness.

Shall I call you to the ghazal of Mir?

Or address as Rubayee of Khayyam ?

I ask the poets

is there any heart robber, any couplet (pair of versus)

The poets said, we swear by our poetry

No, No, No
